Andy Twomey — design engineer

Design systems · Front-end · Accessibility

I build design systems and grow them as teams need more.

At Harvard Medical School I built one component library that four products ran on — an edX course platform, its interactives, a partner dashboard, and a marketing site. At Bentley I built a design system for our email platform, then a tool so producers could use it without touching code.

Alongside that I design and build small web apps, like a searchable archive of Bentley’s alumni class notes, and I started a university-wide accessibility working group that grew to fifteen people from six divisions.

Where I’ve worked

  1. Bentley University Design Engineer 2023 – present
  2. Harvard Medical School Lead UI Designer, Product Development 2021 – 2023
  3. Tufts University Web Specialist → Web Designer → Senior UI Designer 2011 – 2021

Projects

Four projects, each proving something different. Every one of them shipped.

A specification sheet for interaction states: six copies of the same navigation bar showing default, hover, focus, active, the active pseudo-class, and hover combined with focus, each annotated with its behaviour and timing, with a button specified in the same states below. — read the HMX Design System case study

Harvard Medical School · Design system

HMX Design System

One shared foundation consumed by an edX course platform, its interactives, a Partner Dashboard and a marketing site, built to improve accessibility and responsiveness across all four.

  • Four surfaces, one library
  • Accessibility and responsiveness
  • Brand colors standardized
Bentley brand colour cards, each annotated with its contrast ratings, over a photograph of the falcon statue at dusk. — read the Accessibility Working Group case study

Bentley University · Program

Accessibility Working Group

I wrote the proposal and the charter for a cross-departmental group, and recruited co-lead Stephanie Bohler. It came together at fifteen people, ran for eighteen months, and left behind a university-wide resource organized by role rather than by technology.

  • 15 members, 6 divisions
  • 18 months
  • Permanent resource
— read the Bentley Brief Generator case study

Bentley University · Internal tool

Bentley Brief Generator

An email builder with live preview, drag-to-reorder sections, and a size meter that enforces the platform's send limit while you write — so a producer never discovers the ceiling at send time.

  • 40% less production time
  • Enabled producers to build without viewing code
  • Replaced a tool whose output was too heavy to paste

More projects

Shipped work that doesn’t need a case study. Most of these open the real thing.

The impact report's athletics section: a full-bleed photograph of a Bentley soccer player behind a grid of blue cards listing conference championships, with a story headed “Playing with Purpose” below.

Impact Report

A scroll-driven annual report — full-bleed section backgrounds including video, statistic cards and quote shields layered over them, and reveal animations guarded for reduced motion throughout. The current entry in a line of donor reports going back to Fletcher.

The Future of Work

Custom interactive components built for Bentley’s digital magazine — pull-quote layouts, illustrated section breaks, animated transitions. The magazine started requesting new features per issue.

The THER gene therapy interactive: five numbered steps across the top and three purple option cards below, each pairing a therapeutic method with a target gene.

2023

THER gene therapy interactive

Students pick a therapeutic method and target gene, then follow the consequences of that choice across five steps, with hints, dead-ends, and modal explanations. I designed and prototyped it; the development team built it in Preact.

A donor recognition wall: hundreds of donor names tiled across a blue field, with a slider for stepping through the hours of the day, a name search, and a Make a Gift call to action.

2016 Tufts Distinction Award

Giving Tuesday donor wall

Asked to paste donor names into a table, I built an hour-by-hour interactive instead. Eight spin-off campaigns followed, along with a standard “donor wall” toolkit. Each iteration added to or improved the earlier work.

Eight years directing email design and development across Salesforce Marketing Cloud, HubSpot, and Slate.

About

I’m a design engineer in the Boston area. I’ve spent fifteen years in higher education — Tufts, Harvard Medical School, and now Bentley — designing and building the web applications, learning experiences, fundraising tools, and marketing campaigns those institutions run on.

I have an MA in Interactive Design from SCAD and recently finished an MS in Human Factors in Information Design at Bentley in August 2026.

Outside of UX, I’m passionate about astronomy, clean technology, composting, and sustainability. I serve on the Merrimac Green Advisory Committee, where I contribute to local environmental initiatives.
